macOS Big Sur and Your Printer

The new macOS coming soon is macOS Big Sur (version 11.0).  The macOS Big Sur 11.0 is the 17th and newest OS for the Mac. Rumor had it that the newest operating system for the Apple Mac would be released on October 13, 2020 when the new iPhone family was introduced.  This did not happen.  All the official sites had listed October for the release, but those sites now say, “Later in 2020”. So, we shall wait.  I am discussing the release now to let you know that we are ready to test. Our drivers and other software available for our printers will be tested with the official released Big Sur version on its release.

Please check for the driver availability for your printers before you upgrade your OS. Avoid any printing issues from upgrading the Big Sur OS with no drivers available. When released, drivers for the new macOS can be found on the support pages for the printers.

To find the newest drivers navigate to the Xerox Support and Drivers page for your model.  Make sure to choose the printer configuration you have, if applicable. Then select the Big Sur operating system from the Operating System drop down menu. Install the driver.

You may also see updated scan drivers for your multifunction device. If you utilize scanning, update those drivers as well.  Most of the new drivers will be available and posted once they are tested and approved.  Historically drivers are released up to several months after the new OS is released.

Please consult the compatibility document for macOS Big Sur that will be posted soon on the Xerox equipment compatibility with new operating systems page to see if a driver will be created for the model of printer or multifunction device you use before you update your macOS.  Some drivers will have a 1 in the Compatibility Level column, this indicates drivers will be available for this product.  If there is a 2, no driver will be developed.  Printers with drivers still under consideration will have a number 3 in the compatibility level column of the document. Check back periodically to see if the new driver has been released.

If the compatibility level column indicates a 2, then no driver is planned for that model printer.  Check the Additional Information column of the compatibility document for more information about possible workarounds or limitations of the drivers.  For a printer without a driver and no information in the Additional Information column you can try using a previous version of the driver, for instance the Catalina driver though this is not recommended or supported. Using an earlier version may not afford you all the features or options for your printer.

Please consider all your peripherals and their compatibility with the new macOS Big Sur before you upgrade, it may help you to avoid unnecessary frustration. For additional information, you can also reach out to your local support centre or post a question on the Xerox Community Support Forum.

I can’t print out with Xerox WorkCentre 6505 since i upgraded to Mac OS X Big Sur. There was no problem when I used the former version, Catalina. When I tried to print out from print menu, then “set/check fax transmission” window opens. What should I manage to print out?

Totally unacceptable of Apple to release an update (BigSur) knowing it will not support some printers. I have an Epson, spoke with Apple as Macbook would not recognise it. Apple said this printer is not supported. Then spoke to Epson and they said they know of the problem and have no idea if or when a fix will be released. Now unable to print via MacBook. Unacceptable situation and why didn’t Apple ensure printers are compatible. Are they trying to make you buy a new printer!!!!!

Drivers for printing and scanning for WorkCentre 3225 for Mac OS Catalina are terrible bad. Generally said they are unusable. Also, BigSur is already alive and no drivers from Xerox??

It is realy last time I bought anything from Xerox. My Xerox 3225 is just about 2 years old. I will scrap it and buy another brand printer now.

      Hi Peter,
Thank you for reading the blog. Please take a look at the compatibility document for macOS Big Sur 11. Drivers for your model are under consideration and there should be a decision soon. The WorkCentre 3225 was released in 2014 and is no longer sold as new. I understand your frustration and I suggest considering upgrading to a newer Xerox product.

I am highly disappointed that you’ve abandoned support for the WorkCentre 6015ni for MacOS with BigSur. It has been a workhorse of a printer and we just ordered new toner cartridges. Not upgrading to Big Sur is not an option for me as there are new computers on their way to us. Can you at least offer a 3rd party workaround to make the printer at least partially functional on Big Sur (supported or not)? Otherwise, I have a big giant counterweight in my office now that has no need to be obsoleted so unceremoniously.

I replaced the ink cartridges on my Xerox 6015 Workcentre about 2 months ago, at a cost of hundreds of dollars. I subsequently upgraded my iMac from Catalina to Big Sur, only too find that Xerox is not supporting the printer on Big Sur. Reversing the upgrade is a complete pain. The ink I bought was OEM Xerox ink. The decision to “not support” is plainly designed to force older printer users to upgrade to a newer product. It is an outrageously abusive policy, when Xerox is still selling the ink for its obsolete product to unsuspecting customers. I will never buy another Xerox product, and will let everybody I know of my dissatisfaction with this shoddy practice.

Hi, we have a Phaser 6125N. After a fresh install of Big Sur (macOS 11.x) I can’t install the Xerox 6125N driver Mac OS 10.10 & 10.11 driver anymore. Somewhere at the end of the install, I get a error. I can not use this printer anymore.

My colleague, which updated his MacBook with macOS Catalina to Big Sur, still can make use of the printer without any problems. So the driver works, only something in the driver installation file prevents it for installing on Big Sur.

Can you please provide a solution, so I can make use of this printer again with my Mac?

I like the Compatibility docs for the recent MAC OS’s. Is there any thought to adding Scanning compatibility notes? It seems Scanning has come to a grinding halt on new ConnectKey (VersaLink/AltaLInk) devices, with Big Sur in the mix.

      Hi Rob,
Thank you for using the blog. There is a column on the compatibility docs. Any known issues should be there. We are aware that some customers are experiencing scanning issues since an update to Big Sur was issued. We suggest uninstalling the Xerox drivers completely, clear the trash on the Mac and reboot the Mac. Reinstall the driver software with the latest version available for your printer on the support pages for your product.

If that does not help please consider please consider posting on the Xerox Customer Support Forum. Alternately contact your local support centre.

For all people with a Phaser 6125n and Big Sur. if you want to start with a fresh install of Big Sur, then your printer won’t work. But …… you can install a fresh installation of Catalina, then install the Xerox printerdriver, test the printer and then upgrade to Big Sur. your printer will still work after upgrading. There’s a problem with the printer driver installation on Big Sur, which Xerox don’t seem want to fix. But with this workaround you get your printer to work again.

I have managed to download/install the driver and get my laptop running Big Sur to print from my WC3215, but I’m unable to set up “scan to PC”; I’ve connected using the USB, the printer’s display screen says it’s trying to connect, and then it says “not available.” I’ve opened up Image Capture and it doesn’t even show the WC3215 as a connected scanner. Is this a problem with the driver? Would this be resolved in a future version of the driver?
