Today we are getting basic and talking about power. Often when you have an issue with your machine a simple power off power on or POPO (pronounced Poe Poe like the poet Edgar Allen Poe), is all you need to clear an error. Sometimes power problems can keep your printer from fully turning on. So what could cause the printer or multifunction printer to not complete its start up? Again the answer is power.
To solve or at least narrow down this issue you will be asked by support to plug the machine into a dedicated outlet. That means no power strip and no surge protector. Plug the printer into the outlet and unplug any other devices from the outlet.
Insufficient power can keep the machine from operating correctly so by removing any other devices between the machine and the power source we can see if it is a power issue or something else. If the problem continues after plugging directly into the outlet you may be asked to try another outlet and to plug something else into the outlet to make sure it is working properly. If the printer works when isolated to the dedicated outlet then the issue was with the previous connection.
You should also make sure that the power cord is plugged in snugly at the machine and the outlet. Examine the power cord to make sure there are no nicks or exposed areas, if there are then try another power cord.
Some of our printers / multifunction printers have two power switches. If you have one of those devices make sure you power off both switches.
When POPOing make sure to leave the printer off for a full minute, 60 seconds, no less. The amount of time is important; some of the printers need that amount of time to fully “wind down” or power off completely.
One other thing you can try if the machine is not turning on properly is to disconnect anything else attached to the printer like network cables, USB drive, phone lines etc. to make sure none of those connections are causing an issue.
