Update to the Apple Mac OSX 10.11 El Capitan and Xerox Drivers

Update Note December 10, 2015:  Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan driver for the WorkCentre 6015 is now available.

We have some updated information to share with those of you that have upgraded to Apple Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan. Please take a look at the compatibility document for El Capitan. This document lists the printers and multifunction printers and will let you know if a driver is available and if one will be developed for the models of the printers. I have no dates for the delivery of the drivers.

Workarounds have been suggested to get printing working on the Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan.  These workarounds have come from other customers and end users of Xerox printers and multifunction printers, as such we can not guarantee that they will work for you. You try this at your own risk and should consult your IT person or department before trying these options. I will list the workarounds here and also list the machines for which the workaround is suggested. Some products do not yet have a driver for Mac OS X version 10.11 (El Capitan) posted on Xerox.com at the support site.  When that is the case, it means that no driver has passed compatibility testing by Xerox. This means it is not completely confirmed to be ready for use in 10.11.x.
In that case, there are several options. These options should be attempted in the order listed.

  • Install the 10.10 driver
  • Install the Generic driver built into OS X
  • Print via AirPrint (also built into OS X)
  • Change security settings while installing the 10.10 driver

Workaround 1 – Install the Apple Mac OSX 10.10 Yosemite driver
Install the 10.10 driver posted on the Driver and Download tab of the support page for your specific model printer.
Important Note: These drivers have not completed full testing on 10.11.x. (El Capitan) Some features may not work as they do under Mac OS X v.10.10.x (Yosemite).
This option may work with the following products:
Phaser 3250
Phaser 3320
Phaser 3435
Phaser 3600
Phaser 3610
Phaser 4510
Phaser 5550
Phaser 6125
Phaser 6128MFP
Phaser 6130
Phaser 6180
Phaser 6180MFP
Phaser 6280
Phaser 6350
Phaser 6360
Phaser 6500
Phaser 6600
Phaser 7400
Phaser 7750
Phaser 7760
Phaser 8560
Phaser 8560MFP
Phaser 8860
Phaser 8860MFP
Workcentre 3615
WorkCentre 6505
Workcentre 6605

Workaround 2 – Install the printer using the Generic PostScript Printer driver built into Mac OS X version 10.11 (El Capitan)
The Generic PostScript Printer is an Apple solution that is built into 10.11 (El Capitan). Please see Apple’s support site for installation instructions. See the section titled “Add a network printer by its IP address”.
This option requires that the printer or multifunction printer have PostScript capability which is optional on some devices.
This option allows use of a limited set of the printer’s full feature set. Not all features will be available.
This option may work with the following products:
Phaser 6022
WorkCentre 6027
This option may also work with the products listed in option 1 (with a more limited feature set than option 1).

Workaround 3 – Print via AirPrint
For products that will not work with options 1 or 2 above, the next option available is to print via AirPrint. The AirPrint printing system is built into Mac OS X.
The ability to print via AirPrint is built into 10.11 El Capitan. Please see Apple’s support site for installation instructions.
The feature set available when using AirPrint will be limited. The available features are more limited than those in option 2.
This option may work with the following products:
Phaser 3610
Phaser 4622
Phaser 6020
Phaser 6600
WorkCentre 6025
This option may also work with all the products listed in options 1 and 2 (with a more limited feature set than option 1 or 2).
IMPORTANT NOTE: the device must support AirPrint for option 3 to work.

Workaround 4 – Changing Apple Security Settings
For products where options 1-3 are not available (and there is not yet a 10.11 driver available at the support site) changing Apple security settings while installing the 10.10 driver may work. Xerox is currently working on Mac OS 10.11.x drivers for the printers listed below. In the meantime, contact Apple Support to help you temporarily disable the Mac OS 10.11.x’s System Integrity Protection. This will allow you to install the Mac OS 10.10.x driver (followed by re-enabling the System Integrity Protection) and use your Xerox device. Xerox recommends that you wait for the official driver release for Mac OS 10.11.x. This option may work with the following products:
Phaser 6000
Phaser 6010
Phaser 6020
Phaser 6022
WorkCentre 3045B
WorkCentre 3045NI
WorkCentre 6015B
WorkCentre 6015NI
WorkCentre 6025
WorkCentre 6027
This option may also work with all the products listed in options 1-3 (with a more limited feature set than option 1, 2 or 3).

For additional information please contact your local support centre.
Please continue to check both the Drivers and Downloads page for your printer or the compatibility document for Mac OSX 10.11 El Capitan. I do not have any exact dates to provide. Please know that they are working to get the drivers out as soon as possible.  We appreciate your patience while we test the drivers for compatibility and functionality.

OS 10.11 was in not just developer/seed testing for many many months (I participated in the seed program), it was indeed very available through the public beta program. Did your developers not think to avail themselves of this opportunity? That would have given them a ton of time (over 6 months) to test this in advance of 10.11’s release.

And 10.11 was officially, publicly released for free in late September. It’s nearly three months since that official release, and six months since the first beta release. How much time does it take to develop a driver, seriously? I know it’s boring as hell, but that’s what’s needed and what should have taken place. There could have been a driver in testing in June, and certainly by November. This is utterly inexcusable and unexplainable.

      Hi David,
Unfortunately I do not know the process used for creating drivers. I am sure they will release it as soon as they can.

I keep hearing that from you Cheryl at Xerox… meanwhile it’s been over 7months since I’ve been able to print with my Xeros Phaser 8560! And IT IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY!!!

Why hasn’t anyone made the driver yet that will work with my printer under the El Capitan Mac OS!? You told me they were working on it many months ago. Are you terlling the truth or are you lieing Cheryl!??

          Hi Charles,
Thank you for reading the article. Have you reviewed the compatibility document I wrote about? In the document it states that people with the Xerox Phaser 8560 should “Use driver developed for Apple OS 10.10”. If that is not acceptable for you than please contact either the place that sold you the machine or your local support centre. What I share with you in the blogs has been researched and is accurate to the best of my knowledge at the time they are written. Sometimes things change as in this case they tested the 10.10 driver and it was compatible with the MAC OS 10.11 El Capitan so a new driver did not have to be developed.
          Thanks,

This situation really is very frustrating. I purchased this Fuji Xerox CP215W printer about 1 1/2 years ago on the strong recommendation of my local retailer. I had always used Brother printers in the past, but he highly recommended the printer I selected so I followed his advice. I have just spend $500 on new toner cartridges for my busy season (which I am into now and need a reliable printer), and now find that the printer and cartridges are useless to me. Your local support people have tried to help, but I am sitting with an idle printer and tearing my hair out as I have to use my back up inkjet and it’s costing me a fortune in inkjet cartridges right now! Come on Fuji Xerox – get your act together. This really is pretty pathetic reading all the other complains here.

        Hi Wendy,
Thank you for reading the At Your Service blog. Please take a look at the drivers and download page for your machine. Several new drivers have been posted recently. Also consider contacting your local support centre there in New Zealand for further information.
        Thanks,

There is still no driver – see information on Fuji Xerox website – you should know this information! Very disappointing to say the least. Never again will I purchase a Fuji Xerox product!

“Please note that Fuji Xerox will continue to support the affected Fuji Xerox products with new drivers and software for OS X 10.11. New drivers and software will be released to support the affected Fuji Xerox products with OS X 10.11. The current time frame for new drivers and software to resolve these known issues is for January 2016.”

            Hi Wendy,
I apologize that I was not familiar with that note. I do not go to the Fuji Xerox sites often as I am in North America and we have the Xerox.com sites here. It looks like Fuji Xerox has a plan for releasing the drivers in January. I have no further information. Again I apologize for my error.

Thank you for your comment. If you have a DocuPrint CP215w like Wendy has, please take a look at the driver for the machine and Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan. If this does not work for you please contact your local support centre for further information.
          Thanks

            This did not work
Located the printer, but on trying to print a test page got the extremely common but frustrating ‘printer not found’. This is despite the printer being appropriately connected to the wi-fi
Perhaps the error is more fundamental and tied to a failure of the network card in the printer
Contacting the local support centre would be great if they bothered to respond to the contact email.
I am both disappointed and frustrated as I actually thought that this was a pretty good printer when I got it

            Hi Tony,
Thanks for reading the At Your Service. If you are getting a Printer not Found please try to ping the machine to make sure they are communicating. If the problem continues you could try posting your question on the Xerox Community Support forum or contact your local support centre again.

    Work-Around #1
Install the 10.10 driver: (I did this)

Install the Generic driver built into OS X (How? I went to Apple and there aren’t any instructions for doing this.)

Print via AirPrint (also built into OS X): (Can’t find this either)

Change security settings while installing the 10.10 driver: (And just how do I do this? You give no instructions!)

You workaround solutions are ridiculous as you give no instructions for doing any of the things you ask… My Phaser 8560 is still under warranty and a GIANT paper-weight! I cannot believe that XEROX cannot keep up with Apple’s few and far between updates. You guys are given the release dates… SO WHY CAN’T YOU HAVE YOUR SOFTWARE READY?!

DO I GET A REFUND ON MY WARRANTY PLAN? DO I GET AN EXTENSION SINCE I CANNOT USE IT THROUGH NO FAULT OF MY OWN!?

CAN YOU FIND ONE COMPETENT PERSON AT XEROX THAT CAN ANSER THESE QUESTIONS FOR ME!

CAN YOU REWRITE YOUR WORKAROUND SOLUTION WITH INSTRUCTIONS THIS TIME!?

My Phaser 6140 prints crap. For weeks now. My wife is pissed off with me for not being able to print.
My kids give me hell for that one time they need to print was today.
    Xerox – you suck!
Apple gives out betas WAY in advance. The least you could dor for the freaking money I spent on you and your cartridges is to make the freaking driver work. Early 2016? Seriously?

My only way out is to buy a new printer and make sure to tell the sales guy that you, Xerox, suck (bleep). He should never sell a xerox again. I surely never will.

      Hi Lars,
Thank you for reading the blog. I understand your frustration. The driver compatibility document indicates that the driver for your machine will be available in early 2016. Until then you can try one of the workarounds in this blog post.

        Dear Cheryl,
        Appreciate that you’re even responding.
My frustration is exactly that the driver will be available early 2016. We both know that means ‘maybe Feb’. With first public betas for Capitan available to Xerox by mid June, there are no drivers available by December?
Xerox & Fuji should be ashamed.

Thanks Lars I am trying to address everyone’s concerns the best I can. I hope it will be sooner. They (the driver teams) have released 2 so far one for the WorkCentre 6027 the other for the WorkCentre 6015. Always the optimist I am hoping we will see others before years end. Maybe the Phaser 6140 will be one of them! As always I will escalate your comments and concerns to the people that need to see them.

I installed it, but there is still no scanner functionality. In other words, i can’t scan from the computer, only from the printer itself (so I would have to use a file on a USB drive, for example). Am I missing something? With my previous HP all-in-one, I was able to scan directly from my computer and save the file directly to the computer. Thank you.

          • Cheryl Otstott January 13, 2016 -

            Hi David,
I am not sure what you mean by scanning from your computer to the computer. Scanning is done with a shared folder on your computer and the WorkCentre 6027. You would have to be at the WorkCentre to load the document to be scanned and then choose the location and scan. You can find instructions for setting up scan on page 78 of the user manual. That is all the information I can provide with the information you have shared.
            Thanks,
            CherylO-Xerox

          • David toub January 13, 2016 -

As mentioned, one normally would want to trigger the scan from a computer (it’s usually in the Printer/Scanner dialogue in OS X) and save to the computer. Why the need for a “shared folder?” This is way more complicated than it needs to be. Again, I could do this easily from my computer and save the resultant PDF or other scanned file format wherever I wanted on my computer using HP’s drivers.

          • Cheryl Otstott January 18, 2016 -

            Hi David,
I do not have an answer for you. You will need to either call support or post a question on the Xerox community forum for explanation about the workings of the scan feature. I can only go by the instructions in the documentation and on the support pages.
            Thanks,

      • Scud January 4, 2016 - Reply

I guess this is a generic answer, so to save time for those reading these comments:

        1) according to compatibility document, Phaser 3100MFP does not have support for Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan;
        2) there is no Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite driver for Phaser 3100MFP (in fact, there is no official driver for this machine since Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion);
        3) there is workaround for 10.10 involving 10.8 drivers and Terminal commands, but it does not work for 10.11;
        4) none of the four workarounds described in this post work for Phaser 3100MFP.

So it does look like Phaser 3100MFP is dead for Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan users. Xerox should officially admit that.

          Hi Scud,
I have reviewed the information and you are correct there is no driver available for the Phaser 3100 MFP for the Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan and at this time there are no plans to create one.

Cheryl, how is it that Xerox cannot keep up with Apple? It doesn’t make a lot of sense for a public company, let alone one of the largest printer companies in the world. That being said, I appreciate the work you are putting in to answer questions. However, I too have a 7750, but a DN, and none of the work arounds are cutting it. Do you have any other suggestions besides me moving my company off to a different printer company? I just cannot tolerate this kind of corporate hostage routine. It smacks of unprofessionalism and extortion to purchase another machine when this one works really well with antiquated operating systems but not ones that are designed to be EASY.

          Hi Sean-Patrick,

I write a blog, I do not have any contact with the people that write the drivers. I escalate all these comments to management and they share them with the engineering teams that is how we got some drivers pushed through. For your machine they are telling me that the driver for the Apple Mac X 10.10 will work. I do not have access to that operating system or the printer you have in my facility which is why I suggested calling support. They have a lab with many of the OSs and machines available for testing. I apologize if you feel I have not provided the information you were seeking.

Since installing the new driver (compatible with OS 10.11) for the Xerox workcentre 6027, the printer will not wake from sleep. I have to unplug the power and replug it to get a new job to run. What’s that about?

    • Cheryl Otstott January 20, 2016 - Reply

      Hi David,
I have not heard of this being an issue caused by a driver or anything else. One thing you can try is to check the settings for the low power and sleep modes. Make sure they are not set to the same number of minutes. For instance if you have low power set for 30 minutes set the sleep mode for a minute or two more, 31 or 32 minutes. Make sure you have the latest firmware installed on your machine. If none of this fixes the problem then support would need to be contacted for further information and possibly service.
      Thanks,

            Hi Cheryl,

As I said, this ‘driver’ allowed me to print again after 6months without the possibility to use my printer (6months after the release of El Capitan). However, since then, I have that second issue we are talking about :
The printer is not walking from sleep. Even sometimes after reboot, the print does not launch (even if I restart it from computer). And then, sometimes, in the middle of the day, it decide to print…. But sometimes, I just have to ask someone else to use their printer to print a single document, because my expensive & useless printer do not work since I updated to El Capitan….

(Note : I connect to printer using wifi)

            Hello Cheryl,

Thank you for the information. However it does not work. I update the firmware via USB. It says “Completed”. But when I print printer settings page, firmware version is still the old one…

            Hi Vincent,
Please make sure you have Software Download enabled. Here are the steps to do that:
            1.Select the Menu button
2.Scroll to Admin Menu, press OK
3.Scroll to Secure Settings, press OK
4.Scroll to Software Download, Press OK and highlight Enabled
Perform the Firmware Upgrade as detailed in the Firmware Upgrade instructions.
If it still does not upgrade then you would have to call the local support centre for additional help.
            Thanks,

Have new iMac (for wife-not me) with El Crapitan. None of the above worked so I installed the 3225 drivers. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But, I will get a 3225. The 3210 scanner feed is broken and I see that the 3225 has Air Print so the rest of my wife’s useless Mac toys can finally print.

This is very disheartening. I just ordered 2 Xerox printers, the Phaser 6022 and the WorkCentre 3215, they will be delivered in 4 days. I see that there are drivers available now, but after finding this blog and reading the complaints, I have to wonder 2 or 3 years down the road if you will be continually late in releasing drivers after a Mac software update, or just discontinue releasing drivers for them altogether. You certainly don’t appear to be on top of the Mac driver issue.
These are going to be my first Xerox printers, and I hope I don’t regret buying them over similar featured and similarly priced HP, Canon and Brother units. I know they keep up to date with their drivers, certainly releasing them much sooner after a Mac system software update than you appear to.

There’s only so long that a company can live on past reputation.

      Hi Steve,
Thank you for reading the At Your Service blog and for the comment. I understand your concern. I can tell you that every single comment about the delay in drivers for the MAC OS have been forwarded to the team and management that handle the release of updated drivers. We understand the concern and are trying to fix the issues we have had with getting the drivers out in a timely fashion. I hope that you do enjoy your new machines and please do not hesitate to contact your local support centre with any questions or concerns.

Cheryl, the tech was here a week before I posted here. He was not able to get drivers or get scanner to work. I’m not sure what to do at this point. His suggestion was to get the replacement model as this model is no longer available new. My concern is that Xerox won’t be able to keep up with Mac updates. All my systems are Mac.

      Hi Andrea,
Thank you for reading the blog. You do not mention which machine you are using. Please take a look at the compatibility document to see when and if your machine will have updated drivers. As for the Mac updates, I have been forwarding all these comments to the people responsible for issuing the new drivers when new OSs are released. I hope that in the future the drivers will be released in a more timely manner. Please also consider contacting your local support centre for additional information on getting your machine to print and scan.
      Thanks,

I have a Xerox Workcentre 3045NI and it stopped printing when upgrading my iMac to El Capitan Beta version many months ago (June maybe?). during more than 6 months I tried all workarounds suggested in the site without success, and not a word from xerox about releasing a new driver to support this OS X version in that printer model. Now, while looking at the piece of junk in my office that only serves to place papers on top of it, I rechecked the site for info and was glad to find a new driver released in December…. I installed in both my desktop iMac and in my Macbook air. No success! The drivers installed perfectly, the printer is detected, but all documents remain in the printing queue, also no access to the scanner.
Boy, what are your engineers doing??? I can’t believe that a company like Xerox is having this kind of issues. I am about to throw the printer out the window….never buying another xerox product ever.

    • Cheryl Otstott February 29, 2016 - Reply

      Hi Nicolas,
Thank you for reading the At Your Service blog. First remove any Xerox drivers on the Mac and reboot the Mac. Re install the driver. Please make sure you are downloaded the driver for the 3045 NI not the 3045 B. Follow the installation instructions: Download the .dmg file. Once downloaded, double click the .dmg file and then right click on the installer .pkg file and select Open. Then follow on screen prompts. If the problem continues you will need to contact your local support centre. I understand your frustration and I apologize for the delay you encountered.
      Thanks,

    HI, I have 2 Xerox work centre’s 6027 at 2 different locations.
The one I have installed last year in April works flawless.
The one I added early march on our different office is not working. For whatever reason they have both been installed on my Macbook Pro, the second one while I am running El Capitan, and the recent one does not wakeup and I cannot find the Workcentre 6027 on AirPrint as well, (iPhone does not find it) It seems that it disappears after awhile.
Having deleted the drivers for the new one and re-booted my Macbook Pro and re-installed with several different configurations, it does not work. Can anyone help me out here.
I have some decent IT experience, I compared both devices’ settings and they are equal.
    thank you!

It’s June 2016 now. Still no driver! You guys say that the 10.10 version works just fine but I have to beg to differ, it only works sometimes after asking it to print several times. This is really disappointing and makes it impossible to actually work.

    Greetings, Cheryl —

I just wanted to check with you to see if there’s any possibility that there will be El Capitan driver updates for two workhorse Xerox printers in our print shop — the Xerox Phaser 4500N and and the Xerox Phaser 5500N. We’d like to upgrade our Macs to El Capitan, but not having updated Xerox drivers is clearly an issue. Can you offer some hope on this? 🙂

    Thank you!

    • Cheryl Otstott July 25, 2016 - Reply

      Hi Deb,
Thank you for your comment and your dedication to your Phasers. Unfortunately there will not be Mac X 10.11 El Capitan drivers developed for the Phaser 4500 or 5500. Both are more than 12 years old and yes workhorses. I would suggest checking with your local support centre for any workarounds etc. that might have been found.
      Thanks,
      CherylO-Xerox

I submitted this inquiry a week or so ago, but it never showed up in the comments.

Our print shop still uses two old workhorses, the Xerox Phaser 4500N and the Xerox Phaser 5500N. We’ve yet to upgrade to El Capitan, and would like to. Can you offer some hope that these drivers will be updated for El Capitan? We’d sure hate to lose the use of these still-running-strong printers.

    Thank you.

    HELP!!
I have some kind of resource «Xerox WorkCentre 6027 (ICA)» that after som time (2-3 hours) eats up nearly all CPU time on my Mac, thus making it VERY SLOW.
(This was installed as part of the original WorkCentre 6027 driver/software package; «Xerox_WorkCentre_6027_installer_for_Mac_OS» dated 2014.10.13)

The problem is; I cant find out how to remove it ! – I have searched all over, and there’s nothing on my computer that’s named «Xerox WorkCentre 6027 (ICA)» as I can see.
I have tried to update the driver to version «xrwc60271039m107ml» – which doesn’t help.
Also – I miss a «uninstall» utility which work for Mac users … the only one I found at the Xerox web site was for Windows.

I know I can delere / stop the process manually using the Activity Monitor, but I really prefer it to not start at all!

    Anybody ?

It is simply so sad where all (and I mean ALL) corporations have found themselves. Except for perhaps 10 companies. all of them are now dry sponges trying to squeeze out a little profit from technologies they developed years ago. None are innovating. Why? Because they cannot. Innovation requires investment and investment means losses. It means PLANNED losses. And that would mean poor ratings from the analysts on Wall Street. I live next door to a former CEO (22 years as CEO) of a major chemical company. He showed me an annual report where his letter on page one outlined PLANNED losses for — get ready — 8 quarters in order to ensure sector dominance in a particular processing technology. That company remains the leading processor for a particular alloy — and they have been for 30+ years. That means 28 years of profit in one sector after 2 years of losses. He said “the state of Corporations today disgusts me… when I was CEO almost every one of us was an expert in our field. Today they are almost all Finance majors with little actual understanding of the company core competency. It’s a numbers game you hope to survive for 6 or 7 years before getting bounced for whatever financial shenanigans you were able to manage for your tenure.” Xerox is among these companies. I have a Xerox 6280 that I kick everyday when I have to delete it and reinstall it to get it to show up on a local network. HP, no better and EPSON, well that’s just garbage bolted onto brilliant nozzle technology. And for SEO purposes… let’s close with “”bleep” Xerox.”

  28. David Price December 3, 2016 - Reply

And to prove how utterly stupid you at Xerox are, you have a comment system on your support blog that literally displays the post IMMEDIATELY for whatever interim time period required for “moderation” to attend to it. Are you “bleep” kidding me. This is something a crew of 7th graders wouldn’t allow. And now to look at my beautiful condemnation along with whoever else suffering with Xerox gear happens to be on this page.

Now why should I buy a Xerox printer? Time to get rid of this one for a company that gives real support.
